with a winter weather alert. as if sandy wasn't enough, residents in the northeast dealing with a second dose of disaster. 60,000 people lost power today again after yesterday's nor'easter and new york officials are about to make a drastic decision to curb the gas crisis. will thomas joins us now with more. >> the same region devastated by sandy last week just can't get a break, at least not yet. now a nor'easter has made recovery efforts more difficult and snowfall and outages just adds to the problem. it is so bad there is gasoline rationing in new york city and long island. i'll explain how that's working after we look at what's going on. let's roll this. sanitation trucks are clearing piles of debris on staten island, this ighborhood a full mile from the ocean dealing with 12 feet of water, 12 feet, all across the region hundreds of thousands still freezing in the dark. millions of people, yes, got their power back after sandy tore through only to lose it again from the nor'easter. it dumped up to a foot of snow in some parts of new jersey alone. lots of stories of kindness and generosity
had been scheduled to run saturday to thursday, but when superstorm sandy washed away two days of early voting, friday was added and hours extended. voters had until 9 p.m. to vote. anyone in line by that time could still vote and many say the wait, the weather, all of it is worth it just to have a say to exercise a valuable right. >> if you don't vote, that's crazy because there's a lot of people in the past who fought and died for the right to vote. so if you want to do something about our future, get out and vote. >> the mines tuesday are expected to be long, but -- lines tuesday are expected to be long are but it's anybody's guess if they'll be as long as the ones for early voting. polls in maryland open 7 a.m. tuesday. >>> maryland voters have a lot to decide tuesday, seven questions on the ballot, among them question 3 which changes current rules for removing an elected official if they are convicted of a crime. question 4 would guarantee instate tuition to undocumented immigrants. question 5 deals with redistricting. question 6 asks voters to decide whether to legalize g
in the wake of hurricane sandy. many people are signing up to feed and house victims of the storm and making lifelong friends in the process. we take a look. >> reporter: jeannie kumber is a full-time working mother of two, but this dinner she's serving is not for her family. it's for the martinez es, a family she met a couple -- martinezes she met a couple days ago. she met them through the facebook page adopt a family hurricane sandy. most of the victims are from the jersey shore. >> there's a lot of volunteers. it is helping people like you and i, lydia. we are the types of people affected by this. there isn't anyone unscathed. so just the smallest effort has huge returns. >> reporter: jeannie with hundreds of others who like the page have been making meals, donations and friends like maribel. >> i'm still in shock. i know there's a lot of good people out there. i've seen it happen to other people. now that it's happening to us it feels overwhelming and i'm so grateful. >> reporter: maribel and her family lost almost everything they own when sandy flooded their long beach apartment. >>
